Persuasive Speech We Must Control Air Pollution Essay
PURPOSE: To persuade my audience that we must take action now to control air pollution The topic I have chosen for today is something we all take for granted-the air. Most of us hardly ever think about it. Its just something we take for granted. But the air we breathe carries pollutants that can be bad for our health. People with sensitivities, like those who have asthma, or the elderly, and also athletes are especially vulnerable to unhealthy levels of air pollution. There are many kinds of air pollution. The ones I want to talk about are the ozone, acid rain, carbon monoxide and toxic air contaminants. Ozone is formed when hydrocarbons and nitrogen oxide react in sunlight.â⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Acid rain deposits are found in fossil fuels emitted from utility and industrial sources. The power plants that were built before the 1977 Clean Air Act did not have to comply because they were supposed to be phased out eventually. Many are still operating today, releasing much more pollution than modern plants. 97 percent of the acid rain and haze-causing sulfur dioxide, 85 percent of the ozone smog-causing nitrogen oxide, and 99 percent of the toxic mercury pollution come from the utility sector. Unfortunately, these pollutants can be carried in the atmosphere by weather systems. Thus, they can travel for hundreds of miles causing damage as they go. Acid deposits in the soil can have devastating affects in the forest. It gradually causes the loss of plant nutrients, calcium and magnesium. This leads to dying off of trees in the forest. Also, acid deposits in lakes and streams have led to a drop in fish production. Mercury is another source of pollution which can be harmful to humans and wildlife. It comes from the emissions of coal-burning power plants and is deposited into the air and water. This chemical damages the nervous system, and has a detrimental affect on reproduction and prenatal development. Greenhouse gases, carbon dioxide and methane, absorb energy radiated by the Earth and then send it back into our atmosphere as heat. This is called the greenhouse effect. Twenty Pounds of Candy Essay Example For Students
Twenty Pounds of Candy Essay Its always nice to see a smile on a childs face, especially in a war-torn country. The one thing I knew, that always brought joy to the children, was candy. Knowing that made me want to do something special. I did it for the children. It was first deployed as a buck sergeant. The daily routine was missing something. I wanted to do something, to bring joy and happiness to what was, for lack of a better term, a lousy situation. One evening, after my guard shift, I made a phone call to my Mom. The call wasnt routine, so she was pleasantly surprised. Of course we exchanged pleasantries, but that wasnt why I had called. I told her about my idea, and she was absolutely thrilled to help out. She started asking me so many questions at once like, ââ¬Å"how much should I send? â⬠and, ââ¬Å"what do the children like? Do they like taffy? â⬠I couldnt keep up with the questions! I gave up, and let Mom take the reigns. I knew shed be on board. She certainly didnt hesitate to get the goods, and ship them out. Three weeks later, I received a huge box from Mom. As always, my buddies were hovering, trying to sneak a peek at the contents. Judging by the weight, there was 20 pounds of candy in that box. I opened to box, and immediately had to close it. Inside was some of the best candies. She put everything in there, from chocolate peanut butter cups to handmade saltwater taffy. I was tempted to keep it for myself, but I couldnt do that; I knew Mom would want some pictures. The next day was our trip to the local village. I went to my superiors with the idea and they were very supportive. The village was small, with only about 70 inhabitants. A single dirt path ran through the middle of a group of tiny brick and mortar buildings. It was exactly like I remembered it in the movies. As we went in to town, the locals welcomed us. The children laughed and played, as they chased our vehicle to the village police station. The children gathered around as my crew and I dismounted. They were all so eager to see what I had brought them. It was odd to me that they knew I was bringing something. I think our translator tipped them off. I began passing out the candy the all the boys and girls. I must have been out there passing out candy for hours, I then realized I was supposed to be taking pictures for Mom. I managed to get a few photos in before I had to wrap up, and sadly get down to business.

Prostitution Should it be legal misc Essay Example For Students
Prostitution Should it be legal misc Essay Prostitution is known as the oldest profession in the world, however, many states in the U.S. outlaw it. The textbook definition of prostitution is the act or practice of engaging in sexual acts for money (Prostitution, Macmillan 805). Nevada is the first state in the United States to legalize prostitution. Although the long-term effects of legalized prostitution are uncertain, the short-term effects have been economically beneficial. Prostitution should be legalized because not only could it financially benefit the country, but it could also reduce crime. There are many reasons why prostitution is illegal in 49 U.S. states today. First, and foremost, many people feel that prostitution should stay illegal in order to preserve morality. Parents do not want their children to grow up thinking that prostitution is acceptable. Worse yet, parents do not want to hear their children say, When I grow up, I want to be a prostitute. Christianity also looks down upon prostitution because according to their beliefs, the act of sex is only to be done when a man and a woman are in love and married. Monogamy is to be practiced in the marriage, and any violation of this is considered a sin. Another reason why the preservation of morality is so important is that peoples morals shape the future of our nation. Many people feel that if prostitution is legalized, then its long term effects would be detrimental to the United States. The divorce rate in the United States peaked at an all time high in 1980 (Marriage 56). By the legalization of prostitution, this would allow room for husbands and wives to commit adultery. Thus, leading the marriage to a divorce. The divorce rate has really increased over the centuries. In the U.S. today, the divorce rate is fifty percent of the U.S. itself (Holland 86). Second, prostitution is a great health risk to the U.S. because of the spread of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). A major concern about STDs is the spread of AIDS, which is currently a deadly STD because a cure has not yet been found for the disease. The transmission of STDs is already on the rise due to many uneducated teenagers having unprotected sex. In addition, most of theses teens are not going to a physician to be screened for them. Because of this, many curable STDs are going untreated and being spread throughout a community. Prostitution only adds to this problem because prostitutes have sexual contact on a daily basis, and rarely have themselves screened for STDs. Most of the time, prostitutes will not go to a doctor because they cannot afford it, they are too afraid, and/or they just do not want to deal with it. Unfortunately, simply ignoring the problem does not make it go away. Some taxpayers feel that this problem will only increase the cost of health care. In some cases prostitutes become pregnant and are left to raise a child on their own. For these women, their futures are uncertain because now they have a child to care for. This is another concern for taxpayers because the majority of these women will seek government assistance. With prostitution being illegal, many violent crimes against prostitutes go unreported every year. Prostitutes are often too frightened to report the crime to police. Most of the time, the crimes perpetuator is a pimp or a client. Several of the crimes committed against prostitutes include robbery, kidnapping, rape, battery, and/or homicide. Prostitutes, however, are not the only victims. Sometimes the client is also the victim. A street prostitute is already a lawbreaker, which may encourage other crimes, such as rolling clients (drugging them and stealing their money) (Street Cleaning 25). .u3b9f92c2e4951d8dcbd841874fa3a44e , .u3b9f92c2e4951d8dcbd841874fa3a44e .postImageUrl , .u3b9f92c2e4951d8dcbd841874fa3a44e .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u3b9f92c2e4951d8dcbd841874fa3a44e , .u3b9f92c2e4951d8dcbd841874fa3a44e:hover , .u3b9f92c2e4951d8dcbd841874fa3a44e:visited , .u3b9f92c2e4951d8dcbd841874fa3a44e:active { border:0!important; } .u3b9f92c2e4951d8dcbd841874fa3a44e .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u3b9f92c2e4951d8dcbd841874fa3a44e { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u3b9f92c2e4951d8dcbd841874fa3a44e:active , .u3b9f92c2e4951d8dcbd841874fa3a44e:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u3b9f92c2e4951d8dcbd841874fa3a44e .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u3b9f92c2e4951d8dcbd841874fa3a44e .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u3b9f92c2e4951d8dcbd841874fa3a44e .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u3b9f92c2e4951d8dcbd841874fa3a44e .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u3b9f92c2e4951d8dcbd841874fa3a44e:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u3b9f92c2e4951d8dcbd841874fa3a44e .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u3b9f92c2e4951d8dcbd841874fa3a44e .u3b9f92c2e4951d8dcbd841874fa3a44e-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u3b9f92c2e4951d8dcbd841874fa3a44e:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Bradstreet Feminism Essay As a result, crimes associated with illegal prostitution often go unreported and without punishment. 7 Types of Narrative Conflict
7 Types of Narrative Conflict 7 Types of Narrative Conflict 7 Types of Narrative Conflict By Mark Nichol Every work of literature, and much nonfiction narrative, is based on at least one of the following conflicts. When you write a story or a biography, or relate a true event or series of events, you need not focus on such themes, and thereââ¬â¢s no reason to state them explicitly (except in passing, perhaps, to provide insight about a biographical subject), but youââ¬â¢re wise to identify the conflicts inherent in your composition and apply them as you write. 1. Person vs. Fate/God This category could be considered part of conflict with self or with society (many people count only four types of conflict, including those two and conflict with another person or with nature). Thatââ¬â¢s a valid argument, as one confronts fate as part of an internal struggle and religion is a construct of society, but explicitly naming fate (Oedipus Rex) or God or the gods (The Odyssey) as the antagonist is a useful distinction. 2. Person vs. Self A personââ¬â¢s struggle with his or her own prejudices or doubts or character flaws constitutes this type of conflict (Hamlet). 3. Person vs. Person Any story featuring a hero and a villain or villains (The Count of Monte Cristo) represents this type of conflict, though the villain(s) is/are often representative of another antagonist in this list, whether a villain is in essence an alter ego of the protagonist (thus representing the conflict of person versus self) or stands in for society. 4. Person vs. Society When the protagonistââ¬â¢s conflict extends to confronting institutions, traditions, or laws of his or her culture, he or she struggles to overcome them, either triumphing over a corrupt society (I draw a blank here), rejecting it (Fahrenheit 451), or succumbing to it (1984). 5. Person vs. Nature In this conflict, the protagonist is pitted against nature (Robinson Crusoe) or a representation of it, often in the form of an animal (Moby Dick). 6. Person vs. Supernatural Superficially, conflict with the supernatural may seem equivalent to conflict with fate or God, or representative of a struggle with an evocation of self (Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde) or nature (The Birds). But this category stands on its own feet as well. 7. Person vs. Technology Humanityââ¬â¢s innate skepticism about the wonders of technology has resulted in many stories in which antagonists use technology to gain power or in which technology takes over or becomes a malign influence on society (Brave New World).
